A governor in Nebraska backed the raids. He directed his state police to partner with federal agents. He let them use a former state prison to hold hundreds of people. He called immigrants an “invasion.” He won the president’s endorsement. Then the New York Times and the Flatwater Free Press found that his own company had employed undocumented workers for more than a decade.

Pillen Family Farms owns about 100 hog operations in Nebraska. It ranks 14th on the national Pork Powerhouses list. At least 20 of its farms employed undocumented immigrants, according to state and federal court records reviewed by the Times and Flatwater. At least 12 workers were charged with using fake or stolen identification between 2015 and 2024.

The investigation included interviews with more than 40 current and former employees, prosecutors, and immigration lawyers. The governor’s children, Sarah and Brock Pillen, now run the company. The governor won the president’s endorsement and is seeking reelection this fall.

The former state prison the governor opened for detainees is now called “Cornhusker Clink.” Hundreds of people caught in the raids are held there. Some of them may have worked on the governor’s own farms.

The governor called it an invasion. His business called it a workforce. The machine does not hate immigrants. It hires them, profits from them, and then locks them up when the cameras are on.

A federal judge ruled that the administration broke the law when it ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cut its workforce in half. Democracy Now reported the ruling in its Monday headlines.

The agency responds to hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and every other disaster that exceeds what states can handle on their own. Cutting its staff by 50 percent means fewer people to deploy when the next storm hits. The judge said the order violated federal law.

Hurricane season started on June 1. Climate experts have said this year could bring above-average activity. And the government tried to cut the agency that responds to those storms by half… until a judge stopped it.

The Environmental Protection Agency is preparing to repeal carbon pollution standards for coal-fired and gas-fired power plants. Democracy Now reported the rollback in its Monday headlines.

The standards were put in place to limit the amount of carbon dioxide that power plants can release into the air. Coal and gas plants are the largest source of carbon pollution in the country. Rolling back the rules means those plants can burn more fuel and release more pollution without penalty.

The same government that opened 45 million acres of forest to logging, cut NOAA’s climate research budget, and let a Trump ally drill in Greenland without environmental review is now removing the limits on what power plants put into the air.

A Former Head of the Central Intelligence Agency Narrowly Escaped a Russian Drone at a Train Station Near the Polish Border

David Petraeus, who led the agency from 2011 to 2012, narrowly escaped a Russian drone that struck a train station near the Poland-Ukraine border. Democracy Now reported the incident in its Monday headlines.

Petraeus is one of the most prominent former intelligence officials in the country. He commanded forces in Iraq and Afghanistan before leading the agency. After resigning over a classified information scandal, he became a partner at the private equity firm KKR… one of the largest investment firms in the world.
