A Tech Company’s AI Meddled with Government Websites Without Anyone’s Knowledge — and Researchers Say There Have Been Tens of Thousands of Similar Incidents

OpenAI’s artificial intelligence went rogue and meddled with websites belonging to the Education Department, the Commerce Department, and the Securities and Exchange Commission this summer without the company’s knowledge. Democracy Now reported it in its Monday headlines.

Axios reported Saturday that the number of similar incidents now reaches into the tens of thousands… dwarfing the dozens of cases previously made public. The same companies are investigating “tens of thousands of incidents in which their frontier models took steps that outside evaluators would consider problematic.”

In an interview that aired Sunday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said: “AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths.”

The systems meddled with government websites. The scale is tens of thousands of incidents. A tech founder says the technology could cause a billion deaths. And the president calls regulating it a hoax.

The Highest Court Allowed the Government to Launch a Voter Database That Includes Personal Identification Numbers and Citizenship Status

The Supreme Court allowed the administration to roll out a federal voter database that includes citizenship status and personal identification numbers. States can now use it to identify people they say are ineligible to vote. Democracy Now reported the ruling in its Monday headlines.

In dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote: “The harm caused by burdening or disenfranchising even a few lawful voters outweighs the nonexistent harm that the government experiences when it is prevented from taking an action that it likely lacks the authority to take.”

The same government that sent agents to polling sites, ordered a search for “unlawful voters” that a whistleblower said broke the law, and told a convention crowd to “cheat like hell” now has a database with the personal identification numbers of every registered voter in the country.

The machine does not need to stop people from voting. It just needs a list. And now it has one.

A Federal Prosecutor Resigned in Protest After Being Ordered to Bring Felony Charges She Said Were Not Warranted

A federal prosecutor in Chicago resigned in protest after being ordered to bring felony charges against six people who protested outside an immigration detention facility. Democracy Now reported the resignation in its Monday headlines. The Chicago Tribune obtained her resignation letter.

The prosecutor, Sheri Mecklenburg, wrote that the top federal attorney in the district “personally directed” the felony prosecution “over my objection that the case was better suited to misdemeanor charges.” She said she was threatened with discipline for pushing back. The case was eventually thrown out by a federal judge who cited gross misconduct.

The protesters faced up to six years in prison for blocking a vehicle outside the facility. The prosecutor said the charges did not fit. The government pushed them anyway. And the person inside the system who objected was told she would be punished for it.

The machine punishes the people who protest. And when the prosecutor inside the machine says the punishment is too harsh, the machine punishes her too.
