Fifty-seven people have died in immigration detention since the president took office in January 2025. NPR reported Wednesday that the latest death brings the total to 57 in 19 months. Twenty-four of those deaths have occurred since January of this year alone.

That is roughly one death every ten days. The people who died were in the care of the federal government. They were not free to leave. They were not free to seek their own medical help. They were held, and they died while being held.

The system that held them is run largely by private companies. CoreCivic and GEO Group posted $1.4 billion in revenue this quarter. ICE detained a record 50,000 people in July. It bought $20 million in shock gloves. It ordered $2 million in robot dogs. And 57 people have died in its custody.

The total is not prominently reported by the government. The number comes from reporting by NPR, court filings, and congressional inquiries. Each death is announced individually, if at all. The count is assembled by journalists, not the system responsible for these people.

Fifty-seven people. Nineteen months. The machine counts its revenue. It does not count its dead.

The United States Institute of Peace Now Carries the President’s Name — the State Department Launched a New Program There Today

The State Department announced the launch of a program called the Foundry School at what is now called the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. Secretary Rubio delivered remarks at the event this morning in Washington. The institution was originally created by Congress in 1984 as the United States Institute of Peace.

The Institute sits on the National Mall, a few blocks from the Lincoln Memorial. For 42 years, it carried the name of the country. Now it carries the name of the president.

The renaming comes six months into a war with Iran, during a standoff with Oman, after the president claimed the Strait of Hormuz as American territory on a map, and while the DOJ is trying to tear down the Kennedy Center to put the same name on a replacement.

A carrier. A ballroom. A lake. A strait. A concert hall. And now the Institute of Peace. The machine does not build peace. It puts its name on the building where peace used to be studied.

The Pentagon Ordered Testosterone Screening for All Male Service Members over 30

The Pentagon announced that all male service members ages 30 and older will be required to undergo screening for testosterone deficiency. CBS reported the mandate came after the defense secretary called for the change.

The military has struggled to meet its recruiting targets in recent years. Morale on the USS Lincoln was so low that sailors tried to jump overboard. The missile supply is “beyond critical.” And the Pentagon’s response is to screen troops for low testosterone.

The same defense secretary who fired the military’s own journalists, hired social media influencers for secret Pentagon jobs, and called the Lincoln reports “fake news” is now ordering blood tests for hormone levels.

The machine cannot recruit enough soldiers. It cannot keep the ones it has from jumping overboard. And its answer is a hormone test. The machine does not fix problems. It rebrands them.

The World Food Programme Cut Food Aid in the West Bank by Half

The World Food Programme announced it will halve its food assistance in the occupied West Bank. Democracy Now reported the cut on Wednesday. The reduction comes as the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territories deepens.

The U.S. is the largest single funder of the World Food Programme. It also provides more than $3 billion a year in military aid to Israel. The government funds the food and funds the military that restricts access to it.

An Israeli cabinet minister demanded a daily quota for how many people to eliminate in Gaza. The military admitted to striking a car with a five-year-old and her family. The peace plan was rejected. And now the agency that feeds the people caught in the middle is cutting its help by half.

The machine renames the Institute of Peace. It screens soldiers for hormones. It lets 57 people die in its jails. And it cuts the food for the people living under the military it funds. The machine does not balance its books. It balances its interests.

Every dollar, every name change, every mandate flows toward image and away from the people who need help. The dead get no count. The institute gets a new name. The soldiers get a blood test. And the hungry get half.
