The Pentagon strapped 50 of its own officers and civilian staff to polygraph machines in August. The New York Times broke the story. The question the investigators asked: Did you tell the press that the missiles are running out?

The Joint Staff includes up to 2,000 people. They coordinate war plans and operations for every branch of the military. Investigators pulled 50 of them into rooms and wired them to lie detectors. They asked whether anyone had shared classified details about the depleted stocks of Patriot interceptors and long-range missiles with reporters.

Experts called the move “unprecedented.” Mass polygraphs have never been given to the top ranks of the U.S. military in modern history. The Times reported that the campaign was aimed “not just at ferreting out anyone who may have shared information, but intimidating others who might do so in the future.” A retired Navy lawyer called it unprecedented.
